By Geoff Bryant Kirengeshoma palmata Sometimes known as yellow waxbells, Kirengeshoma palmata is a late-flowering rhizomatous perennial up to 1.2m high with arching stems and is native to the woods and mountain lowlands of Korea and the Japanese islands of Shikoku and Kyushu. The unusual name? No, it doesn’t come from an obscure Danish botanist called Kirengeshom. It’s really just a Latinised version of the original Japanese name. Palmata, a common specific epithet, means shaped like a hand and refers to the foliage. Formerly classified in its own family, it is now a member of the hydrangea family, although its flowers, which are around 3cm long, are more reminiscent of those of a single-flowered Japanese anemone. The flowers of most of the plants seen in gardens are a fairly deep yellow, though the colour of wild specimens ranges from white to apricot. While beautiful and graceful, the fleshy-petalled flowers, which are borne in sprays on wiry stems that bend under their own weight, never really open fully. The buds start to burst in early autumn. While the flowers can be something of a disappointment, it isn’t too great a disadvantage that they don’t open fully as this is a plant grown as much for its foliage as its flowers. The leaves are up to 20cm long and wide with pointed lobes that are deeper on the basal leaves and very shallow on the reduced leaves found on the flower stems. The generally accepted opinion is that it the only species in its genus, but some botanists prefer to classify the Korean plants separately as Kirengeshoma koreana. As far as gardeners are concerned any differences between the plants are very minor, though there is some suggestion that the Korean plants may eventually be larger than their Japanese cousins and that their flowers open more fully. As you would expect, considering its origins, Kirengeshoma palmata prefers a moist, leafy, humus-rich soil in partial shade. In other words, typical woodland conditions. In late autumn it dies back to its rootstock, which is extremely hardy and quite capable of withstanding -15C. It is propagated either by division in winter or early spring, or by raising from seed. The seed prefers cool temperatures, around 12to 15C and the germination time is variable, anywhere from 30to 300 days. I’ve found that sowing fresh seed in the autumn and leaving the seed tray in a shady place for germination in the following spring satisfies any stratification requirements and gives good results. Kirengeshoma palmata is an ideal companion for any Japanese or Chinese woodland plants and looks magnificent under maples, the leaf shape of which it complements perfectly. Because it needs ample summer moisture it thrives at the edges of a bog garden with candelabra primroses, Rodgersia and irises. Its late flowering habit is invaluable in providing interest at a time of year when other woodland plants may be becoming rather dull. So why isn’t it far more common? I have absolutely no idea. If you trace a stocking, leave an extra inch all around for the seams. Leave three inches at the top to turn under. Cut two of them out of fabric for each stocking. Making a Christmas Stocking Pattern To make a pattern, use heavy cardboard. Draw two rectangles. The first should be 15 long by 9 wide. These patterns include the seam allowances of 1 and top cuff of 3. This rectangle is A. Cut it out and label it. Draw the second rectangle 14 long by 6 wide. This is rectangle B. Cut it out and label it. Place B on a table with the long side horizontal to you and the short side vertical to you. Round off all the corners of B, except for Bs upper, left corner. Place A on the table with the long side vertical to you and the short side butted against B, on the top, left side of B. This forms the stocking, with the calf part on the left (A) and the foot and toes on the bottom (B). Tape A and B together and use it as a pattern to trace onto fabric. Making a Christmas Stocking Cut two stockings out of fabric, using your pattern. Put them together with the right sides on the inside. Sew around the stocking with a 1 seam, leaving the top open. Clip the curves with V shapes to allow the fabric to lie flat. Be careful not to cut through your seam. Turn the stocking right-side-out. Fold the top 3 to the inside and sew in place. You can sew a decorative cuff on the outside if you wish. Sew a strip of fabric to create a hanger and sew it to the stocking. Decorate as you wish. The article states that this career track has one of the most disproportionate ratios of training to pay. I believe it. As a one-time research scientist myself, I experienced the low pay first-hand. In all honesty, it was barely enough to support my modest living needs, let alone a family. I found myself in the uncomfortable position of actually making less than a full-time waitress. This was with my Masters degree in Molecular Biology working at a prestigious academic institute. And as much as Id like to say it gets better with more education, I cant. Unfortunately, the salary and job expectations only seem to only worsen with the degree level. If youre a postdoc, you know exactly what I mean. Decades ago, the postdoctoral position was merely a stepping stone on the road to something bigger and better. But today, many postdocs are trapped in their temporary positions. Some spend as long as a decade, or more, just biding their time, searching for their big-break into the small pool of permanent Ph.D. positions. Even those that make it are forced to go where the money is, which might not be where their ideas and dreams would take them. I can imagine if youre in this position, youre probably wondering why Im bringing this up. To rub in how incredibly underpaid you are? No. Instead, I want to let you in on a little secret. Its a shortcut actually. You see, my story changed when I found out that as a scientist, I qualified to begin a career in patent law. All I needed to gain status as a registered Patent Agent was pass an exam conducted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Upon passing this exam, I would be legally eligible to write and prosecute patents in the U.S. Chances are you qualify to take this exam and become a Patent Agent too. It is frequently found growing with goldenrod, the snow white flowering bracts contrasting nicely with the brilliant golden color of the goldenrod. One of the more common fall blooming wildflowers, Late Bonesets snow white flowers beautify the autumn woodlands and fields of the countryside. No longer considered a healing herb, the heavily blooming plants are soothing to the eye in the bright September sun.
